About Emma Styles

I have been a practising veterinary surgeon since 1989 and am a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. I graduated from Murdoch University Veterinary School in Western Australia and worked for two years in large and small animal general practice in Australia before travelling to the UK where I have worked mainly in small animal general practice.

Emma Styles

I have always had an interest in complementary therapies and I started my formal veterinary acupuncture training in 1999. I was amazed and impressed by the power and subtlety of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, and started using it immediately. I have studied veterinary acupuncture in the UK and Australia, and was awarded the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) Certificate in Veterinary Acupuncture in 2002. I have remained a member of IVAS and in order to maintain my certification I need to complete a minimum amount of approved continuing education every two years.

IVAS and the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (ABVA) promote the teaching and practice of both Western and Traditional Chinese veterinary acupuncture methods. I am a member of the ABVA and have the ABVA Certificate of Safety and Competency in Veterinary Acupuncture. I am a member of the Australian Veterinary Acupuncture Group (AVAG), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association, and have recently completed a modular course of study with Dr Bruce Ferguson in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Herbal Medicine.

I live in East London and am a member of the Triratna Buddhist Community associated with the London Buddhist Centre. At present I have no pets but I very much enjoy contact with my animal patients and with the dogs and cats of my friends and family. I especially love to take Elly (my sister’s collie cross kelpie) to the beach near her home in Western Australia. She is very photogenic and features several times on this site. Thank you to everyone who generously donated pictures of their dogs or cats for me to include on this website.
